Sharon Saw was visiting Wellington and decided to ask Kristeen Johnston from SI Wellington if any of the SI ladies she met on the SWP EEC programme last year would like to meet up. The date was set for 10 August, 3pm at Zealandia and she was delighted to see Soroptimists from SI Wellington, SI Upper Hutt and SI Kapiti Coast at tea! She was especially thrilled to see her hosts during her visit in 2013 – Gillian Buchanan (SI Upper Hutt), Bernice Croft (SI Wellington) and Jane Stent (SI Kapiti Coast). Jocelyn Butcher, who also hosted Sharon on her visit last year, was intending to come but something cropped up so she couldn’t make it. It was lovely to see Lyn Stewart, President of SI New Zealand Central Region, too!
It was great to catch up and listen to the ladies talk about their upcoming discussions for their business meeting, such as the sensitivities of fund raising for administrative fees and the English Public Speaking competition. Of course we also talked about who was going to Istanbul next year!
Kristeen Johnston brought a newspaper clipping from 1939 which was about the founding of SI Wellington, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The news article listed out the professions of the women and apparently, Soroptimist clubs used to only restrict one representative of each profession in the club, so if there was already a lawyer, for example, and a new member was a lawyer, she had to wait until the current lawyer left the club! Thank goodness things have changed since!
SIPJ sends its heartiest congratulations on SI Wellington’s anniversary!
Sharon thanks all the ladies from the three clubs who came to have tea and she looks forward to seeing them again soon! Please keep in touch!
